MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxing icon Emmanuel “Manny" Pacquiao on Monday confirmed that he would once again try to crash into politics in the 2010 elections.
GMA Network’s primetime news 24 Oras reported that Pacquiao is planning to run as congressman of Sarangani province.
Pacquiao said that although he listens to the advices of people discouraging him from joining the political fray, his plan to seek a congressional seat is already final.
"It's final. No retreat, no surrender," Pacquiao said in an interview.
One of those who asked Pacquiao to back off from politics was Fr. Emmanuel Gellez of Our Lady of Good Voyage parish in General Santos City. Gellez, during his homily, said that he was hoping that Pacquiao would change his mind.
"Nawang di ka magpadala sa maling pamumulitika. Alam natin sa ating sitwasyon, maraming naghahangad sa iyong impluwensiya (I hope you will not be a victim of dirty politics)," Gellez said.
Pacquiao announced his political plan when he registered at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Kiamba, Sarangani, where his wife, Jinky, is a resident.
At the same time, Pacquiao tried to allay fears of fans worried about his boxing career should he join politics.
"Wag silang mag-alala kasi retired na ako no’n before 2010 retired na ako no'n, at gusto nga ng pamilya ko dito mag-retire. Ayaw ko muna medyo hinahanap ng katawan ko yung boxing mga ilang laban na lang (My fans should not worry because by 2010 I am already a retired boxer)," he said.
Pacquiao ran for a congressional seat in South Cotabato in 2007 elections, but lost to incumbent Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio.
The boxing hero said he believes that the outcome of the previous polls was clean as he hinted that his political machinery was inefficient at that time.
The boxing champion, however, said that he is now prepared to serve his countrymen.
"Marami akong naging experience doon sa last elections at naniniwala ako na tama na ganon ang nangyari at hindi ako preparado ngayon sa tingin ito na yung tamang panahon para tutulong naman sa ako sa taong naghihirap (I’ve had many experiences last elections and I believe that the result was clean. I wasn’t prepared last time but now I think I am ready to help the poor)," he said. - Aie Balagtas See, GMANews.TV
