Flash floods still threaten Visayas-Mindanao areas

MANILA, Philippines - Despite the exit of tropical storm "Ulysses" (Dolphin), flash floods and landslides still loom over parts of Mindanao and the Visayas, state weather forecasters said Thursday. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said "Ulysses" was estimated at 1,450 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes. "Ulysses" packed maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of 100 kph and is forecast to move east-northeast at 24 kph. However, Pagasa said an intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is now affecting Mindanao, Pagasa said. "Mindanao and the eastern section of Visayas will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms," it said in its 5 a.m. bulletin. It added moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Northern and Eastern Luzon and Eastern Visayas and the coastal waters over these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate blowing from the northeast to north with slight to moderate seas except during thunderstorms, Pagasa said. - GMANews.TV
