Former Arroyo senior military aide named PMA superintendent


MANILA, Philippines – A former senior military aide of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was named the new superintendent of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). In a press statement, the PMA said AFP deputy chief of staff for intelligence Rear Admiral Leonardo Calderon will assume his new post on Saturday, and will occupy the post vacated by Maj. Gen. Leopoldo Maligalig retired last Nov. 15. Assistant PMA superintendent Brig. Gen. Rommel Gomez has been serving as acting superintendent since Maligalig's retirement. Armed Forces chief Gen. Alexander Yano will preside over the turn-over ceremonies in Fort del Pilar, Baguio City, the statement read. Prior to his appointment as AFP deputy chief of staff, Calderon served as chief of the Intelligence Service of the AFP (Isafp). Immediately before that, he served as President Arroyo’s senior aide. He had also commanded the counter-intelligence unit of the Navy; the Naval District; NISF; a Military Intelligence Group of Isafp, and Navy Finance Center.He also served as Senior Military Aide to the Defense Secretary. Calderon had extensive military schoolings locally and abroad. He holds two masteral degrees, one in management and development program at the Asian Institute of Management and another in strategic business economics program at the Center for Research in Communication. Meanwhile, a military source said Commodore Victor Emmanuel Martir, who once served as chief of the Naval Intelligence Security Force, will take over the post which will be vacated by Calderon. Calderon is a classmate of Yano, Army chief Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado and Navy chief Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez in the PMA class 1976. Martir belongs to the PMA class of 1978, which had adopted President Arroyo as an honorary member. - GMANews.TV
