Opposition politicians identified with Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson are set to create a new political party called “Unlad Filipino" (Filipino Progress), Makati Rep. Agapito “Butz" Aquino told GMANews.TV on Monday.
Aquino would not say if Unlad Filipino would field its own candidates, stressing that the new party should not be considered as a third force in the coming election.
"If the opposition is divided in (the 2007) elections, the opposition candidates are doomed to fail," he said.
Aquino, who was campaign manager of Lacson’s 2004 presidential bid, said their group will register Unlad Filipino with the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
He noted that those involved in the creation of the new party are Representatives Ronaldo Zamora of San Juan, Rolex Suplico of Iloilo, and Benjamin Agarao of Laguna, who are all identified with the Lacson wing of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP).
The LDP is split between those who follow Lacson, who placed third in the 2004 presidential polls, and those who recognize as the party’s head Senator Edgardo Angara, who supported the presidential bid of the late actor Fernando Poe Jr, who narrowly trailed President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
The LDP under Angara has manifested its plan to field the party's own senatorial ticket, separate from those to be fielded by the United Opposition headed by Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay and the Liberal Party (LP) wing of Senator Franklin Drilon. -GMANews.TV
