Arroyo to lead Rizal Day rites in La Union


MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo will lead on Tuesday the commemoration of the 112th anniversary of the martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal in San Fernando, La Union. A Malacañang statement said Arroyo, who will first unveil twin centennial markers of the Mansion House in Baguio City, is due at 11 a.m. at the San Fernando City Plaza. Upon arrival at the city plaza, she will receive full military honors, including a 21-gun salute, by a contingent from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). She will then lead the flag-raising ceremony. Assisting her are provincial officials led by Gov. Manuel Ortega, Reps. Victor Ortega and Tomas Dumpit Jr., and San Fernando City Mayor Pablo Ortega, and National Historical Institute (NHI) Executive Director Ludovico Badoy. The traditional wreath-laying at the foot of the Rizal Monument will follow with Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano assisting Arroyo. On Wednesday, Arroyo will return to Baguio City for a 10:30 a.m. interview with the local media at the guest house of the Mansion House. She will then distribute Christmas food packs to some 3,000 families from the city's 128 villages. - GMANews.TV
