Arroyo relieved RP spared from bad year

MANILA, Philippines - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Wednesday expressed relief that the Philippines was spared from a "tumultuous" 2008 which was marked by the global economic recession. In her New Year message, President Arroyo also expressed hopes that government efforts "to eliminate poverty and to improve the living of our people will continue to bear fruit and that the efforts will pave the way to the creation of a more prosperous Philippines." "The year 2008 was tumultuous for the world due to the global economic recession that, thankfully, has not become a crisis in the Philippines," Mrs Arroyo said. "So I pray for greater peace and stability. I hope that we can all work together as a global community to weather these storms," she added. The President said she also wishes for "peace, progress and prosperity for the people of the nation" for 2009. - Amita Legaspi, GMANews.TV
