MANILA, Philippines - The “fullest extent of the law” should fall on those who would indiscriminately fire their guns on New Year’s Eve even if they belong to the military and police, a senator said Wednesday.
In a statement, Sen. Edgardo Angara urged authorities to pay extra attention on irresponsible gun owners, saying the New Year “is not the time to tolerate irresponsibility as stray bullets do not discriminate who its next victim would be.”
"From new-borns to senior citizens, indiscriminate gun firing places everyone's lives at risk just because of some gun-wielding people who wants to celebrate New Year in an irresponsible way," Angara said.
He said promoting responsible gun ownership is the key policy issue involved on the matter.
Angara cited statistics from the Department of Health showing that, a week before the New Year, at least two cases of stray bullet injuries have been confirmed.
News reports also showed that an eight-year-old boy who was hit by a stray bullet on Christmas Day in Caloocan City has already died
"Let us all be responsible citizens, for us to face 2009 safely, merrily and full of blessings and bounty," Angara said.
"Gun is not a power, in which police and military authorities are entitled to have, to be abused. The power to wield a gun comes with the corollary responsibility to promote public safety," he added. - Amita Legaspi, GMANews.TV
