Solon to colleagues: Set aside time for sessions, not just 2010 campaign

MANILA, Philippines - Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri on Monday urged his colleagues who are planning to run for higher posts in the 2010 elections to continue attending sessions and fulfilling their duties rather than campaigning. "Ang payo ko sa ating mga senador na tatakbong presidente at bise presidente, ang pinakamagandang campaign para sa kanilang pagkapanalo ay ang kanilang output sa Senado (My advise to the senators planning to run for president and vice-president is that their best campaign is their output in the Senate," Zubiri said. He said that he believes that hardworking senators who have the most number of bills passed in 2009 will have the advantage when 2010 comes. "Noong tumakbo nga ako noong 2007 yung lahat ng commercial ko ang binabanggit ko lang ay yung mga bills na naipasa ko sa House of Representatives (When I ran for senator in 2007, all I have been saying in my commercials are the bills I was able to pass during my term at the House of Representatives)," Zubiri said. Zubiri figured in a tight battle for the 12th place in the 2004 elections. He added that senators are only needed at the Senate for only three days because of the sessions. "Thurdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays pwede na silang mangampanya at magsilayas (They can go wherever they want and campaign during Thurdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays)," Zubiri said. "Ang importante kailangan ko sila pagdating ng Lunes, Martes at Miyerkules. Sana nandun sila sa senado dahil ang kailangan natin ay warm bodies. (What is important is that they are present during Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I expect them to be there as we need warm bodies)," the senator added. He said among the measures the Senate need to attend to are the 2009 proposed national budget, the baseline bill, the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program law, the Rent Control law extension and the bill proposing an increase in the deposit insurance coverage. Among those who expected to gun for higher posts in the 2010 are former Senate President Manuel Villar, Senators Panfilo Lacson, Manuel Roxas, Loren Legarda, Francis Escudero, Ramon Revilla Jr and Jose Estrada. - Amita Legaspi, GMANews.TV
