Ackerman, influential broker and RP's first stockmarket columnist, dies at 87


MANILA, Philippines - Irving I. Ackerman, 87, an influential stockbroker who wrote the Philippines’ first stock market column, died in January 17, 2009, after devoting 45 years to the stockbrokerage industry. Besides beating deadlines for the Manila Times from 1958 to 1967, Ackerman also wrote two books, “Guide to Some Pitfalls in Business" and “How to Invest and Win in the Stock Market." Subsequent series of his stock market column also appeared in the Weekly Nation from 1970 to 1971 and the Philippines Herald from 1971 to 1972. His published works proved his “commitment to nurture the stock market community," the Philippine Stock Exchange said in a statement. Ackerman has been a stalwart of the Philippine stock market, having served as one of the founding members of the Makati Stock Exchange in 1963, the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) said in a statement. Throughout his life, Ackerman also “advocated investor protection through his active and valuable participation in the Securities Investors Protection Fund, Inc.," the statement said. Ackerman was an Incorporator of the PSE Foundation, Inc. and the Philippine Association of Securities Brokers and Dealers, Inc. He also sat as a member of the Board of Governors of the unified Philippine Stock Exchange from 1995 to 1996. He was nominee and president of brokerage firm I. Ackerman & Co., Inc. thereafter. “The PSE, its Board of Directors, Trading Participants, Management and Employees, express deep sorrow as Mr. Irving I. Ackerman join His Creator on January 17, 2009 at the age of 87," the PSE said. Ackerman earned his B.B.A. in 1942 and an M.B.A. in 1949 from the City University of New York. He completed his Ph.D. in economics, finance, and investments at the New York University. As a professor, he taught international trade and finance in these two schools. Ackerman also taught investment management at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business and was also chairman of the school’s stock market seminar program. Ackerman is survived by wife Maria Luisa and son David. - GMANews.TV
