US envoy calls for prosecution of rights violators

MANILA, Philippines - US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney on Monday called for the prosecution of human rights violators in the country. "There is a need to strengthen the judicial institutions and the guilty of human rights violations must be prosecuted faithfully, honestly, transparently, and rapidly," the US ambassador said. Kenney made the statement during the launching of the Executive Information System of the Commission on Human Rights. The system will monitor the status of human rights cases. "Cases must be brought to their conclusion and have those responsible pay the price," Kenney said. The ambassador expressed hope that Filipinos "realize their potential and are able to pursue their dreams without being harassed and robbed of their dignity." Activist groups have consistently criticized the human rights record of the Arroyo administration for allegedly not acting on cases of rights violations. A militant group has voiced opposition against the possible appointment of retired Major General Jovito Palparan to the Dangerous Drugs Board for his alleged violations of human rights. The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan has accused Palparan of ordering extrajudicial killings of activists while in the military. Palparan has repeatedly denied the allegations. - GMANews.TV
