2 people feared killed by North Cotabato floods

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines — Two people were feared dead in flash floods in Barangay Poblacion, President Roxas, North Cotabato in Southern Philippines Monday evening. Mario Calayco, Barangay Poblacion chief, identified those believed killed by rampaging flood waters as mother and daughter Merlyn and Jinky Calayco, residents of Barangay Nagcarlan. Chairman Calayco said the bodies of Merlyn and Jinky remain missing as of posting time. Some 20 families living near the Kabacan river abandoned their houses when water level rose on Monday. Calayco reported that flash floods devastated at least 10 houses made of light materials. Dislocated families sought refuge at the President Roxas Central Elementary School while the rest stayed with their relatives in nearby villages. Calayco also said barangays Poblacion, Idaoman and Nagcaralan were also hit by the flash floods. Undetermined hectares of rice fields were also submerged, Calayco said. -Williamor A.
