Church poll watchdog welcomes new Comelec

MANILA, Philippines - A Church-backed poll watchdog group welcomed the appointment Tuesday of Elias Yusoph as one of the new commissioners of the Commission on Elections (Comelec). Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) chairwoman Henrietta de Villa said she was glad President Arroyo made the appointment before the 2010 elections. "In one way we are glad that they are already complete in the commission," De Villa said in an article on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website. She said that with no more vacancy in the Comelec, the poll body can now work more efficiently. Yusoph replaces the late Romeo Brawner as Comelec commissioner. On the other hand, she said she was not surprised with Yusoph's appointment, saying they knew the Palace will appoint someone from the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). But De Villa declined to comment further on Yusoph, saying she does not personally know him. She said the PPCRV is just hoping Yusoph will uphold professionalism and have the courage to do the right thing. "The PPCRV congratulates him and hopes that he will manifest the values we look for: integrity, competence, independence and an uncompromising adherence to truth," she said. - GMANews.TV
