4 killed, 2 missing in Negros floods, landslides

MANILA, Philippines - Four people died while two others were missing as flashfloods and landslides caused by torrential rain struck Negros Oriental in central Philippines over the weekend, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said. The Central Visayas Office of OCD identified the fatalities as Bernie Mar Demecillo, 2; Susan Fernandez, 11; Judelyn Fernandez, 11; and Felix Sajulla, 65. Subjects of ongoing search and rescue operations are Maricel Demecillo and Ronald Quijano, a fisherman. Two others – Julius Fernandez and Marites Fernandez, both aged 9 – were hurt in the incident, the OCD report said. The report said Demecillo and her son Bernie Mar were washed away by rising flood waters that entered their home in Barangay (village) Canau-ay, while Quijano has been reported missing since Saturday. Sajulla was killed after being washed away by flood waters in his home in Amlan last Saturday, the report said. Mudslides meanwhile hit the home of the Fernandez family in Barangay Sagbang in Valencia town last Saturday, resulting to the deaths of Susan and Judelyn, and injuries to Julius and Marites. An estimated 300 families were displaced while about 14 houses were washed away by raging floods in Dumaguete City, the report said. - GMANews.TV
