Jaime Paule confined at St. Luke's - lawyer

MANILA, Philippines - Jaime Paule, the alleged Malacañang liaison implicated in the P728-million fertilizer fund scam, is confined at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City where he is receiving treatment for a blocked carotid, his lawyer said Wednesday. "Nandoon siya sa (St. Lukes)... siyempre masama yung pakiramdam. Nineteen ninety-nine (1999) pa siyang may blockage sa carotid gland. Meron forty-five percent na blockage so halos kalahati nalang... naka confine siya," said Ferdinand Topacio in an interview aired over radio dzBB. ["He's in St. Luke's. He's not feeling well. Since nineteen ninety-nine he has been diagnosed with blockaged on his carotid gland. Now he's suffering from forty-five percent blockage so he's confined."] The Senate has issued an arrest order against Paule for allegedly lying during the Senate hearing into the P728-million fertilizer fund scam. Topacio had earlier questioned the legality of the arrest order and said he would bring it before the Supreme Court. But Topacio also said that he would turnover his client to the Senate apprehending team and let them discuss the arrest with Paule's physician. "Our Senate apprehending team is very well-versed in this thing. I will turnover to them Mr. Paule and then what they do is up to them and the hospital authority and the attending physician of Mr. Paule," Topacio said. "Sila na po ang mag-uusap diyan dahil iyan po ay hindi na legal 'yan. Labas na po tayo diyan [I will let them talk about the issue because this no longer a legal matter but rather a medical concern]," he added. Topacio also said he had assured Gen. Jose Balajadia, the Senate sergeant-at-arms, that he would continue to update the Senate on his client's condition. A team from the Senate sergeant-at-arms had started staking out Paule's residence in Antipolo City after receiving late Tuesday the order for his arrest. - GMANews.TV
