MANILA, Philippines – Quezon City extended its dominating performance from the track to the pool when the medal-rich swimming event began Thursday in the ongoing 2009 National Capital Region (NCR) Palaro Regional eliminations in Pasig City.
Except for secondary girls division, it was an all Quezon City show at the PhilSports Complex swimming pool where after 40 events its elementary boys’ team leading Manila by 78 points. Even QC’s secondary boys’ division squad also enjoy a 40-point edge over Manila.
The Department of Education (DepEd) is using the point system instead of the medal tally in determining the overall champions of the NCR Palaro eliminations where they give seven points to gold medal winners, five and four points to silver and bronze medalists, while two and one to fourth and fifth place finishers.
Leading Quezon City’s brilliant pool performance are Thea Caluma in elementary girls 100-meter freestyle, Jan Jeric Santos and Anna Domini Bartolome in the elementary boys and girls 50-m backstroke, their elementary girls 400 meter medley team, Gabriel Castelo in the secondary boys 100-m butterfly, Adel Karlo Barlisan in the secondary boys 800-m freestyle and their elementary boys 200-m freestyle relay team.
Sharing the days honors are double-gold medalist Rafael Sta. Maria of Muntinlupa, NCAA juniors swimming most valuable player Marciano Yu of Las Pinas, Taguig-Pateros’ Johasen Benedict Aguilar and Dorothy Grace Hong of Parañaque.
The other gold medal winners are the Ingrid Ilustre-led Manila secondary girls’ 400-m medley team, the capitals’ elementary girls and secondary girls 200-m freestyle relay teams, Dunn Clark Vinluan of Makati, Manila's Christine Mendoza and teammates Paula Pandes and Kimberly Uy. – GMANews.TV
