Detained general's supporter denies fresh coup plot

MANILA, Philippines - A supporter of suspected coup plotter Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim on Monday said they are not part of any attempt to overthrow the Arroyo administration. Former Armed Forces Northern Luzon Command chief (ret) Lt. Gen. Romeo Dominguez led the group who signed a manifesto of support to Lim where they cited their aspiration for “peace, progress and prosperity.” “I am not a de-stabilizer. I was not involved in a (destabilization) plot before. If you are going to look at my record, I am not a member of RAM [Rebolusyonaryong Alyansang Makabayan],” said Dominguez. The manifesto of support was published Monday as an advertisement in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The signatories said they believe that Lim has the “essential leadership qualities to steer us towards our vision.” They also described Lim as having the “impeccable character to lead with moral authority” and has “consistently displayed uncommon valor and patriotism in the face of extremely difficult situations.” Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., meanwhile, scored the advertisement, saying it was obviously aimed at “politicizing” the military or to float Lim’s reported interest in seeking public office. Teodoro said he had heard reports on Lim’s alleged interest in running for Senate in next year’s elections. Deputy Presidential Spokeswoman Lorelei Fajardo said a legal team is reviewing the content of the advertisement to determine if there are any legal violations. - GMANews.TV
