300 kilos of tainted meat seized in Pasay - report

MANILA, Philippines - Amid an Ebola Reston virus scare in pork, authorities seized about 300 kilos of "double-dead" meat in Pasay City, a radio report said early Wednesday. Radio dzBB's Louie Garcia reported that village officials of Barangay [village] 186 in Maricaban district intercepted the meat after getting a tip from local residents. Village officials arrested Roberto Clet and Rafael Fruelda, who they caught trying to bring the meat to a local market aboard a tricycle. However, the tricycle driver managed to elude arrest. Initial investigation by the city veterinarian's office led by meat inspector Juan Godofredo Villafranca showed the meat was indeed "double dead" as shown by blood clots. Also, the two showed a meat inspection permit for only one hog. They were bringing the meat to the local talipapa (market) when intercepted, the report said. The seized meat was to be given to crocodiles at a crocodile park in Pasay City. The two face charges for violating the Consumer Act and Meat Inspection Code. - GMANews.TV
