Hatton in good hands, says Schaefer

MANILA, Philippines – Golden Boy Promotions president Richard Schaefer said he is confident Floyd Mayweather Sr. could whip up Ricky Hatton in top fighting form when the Hitman faces Manny Pacquiao on May 2. “I’m not really worried about it because the guy who is going to train him is Mayweather Sr.," said Schaefer in the news website Press-Telegram. “I can assure you Mayweather Sr. is going to make him forget his girlfriend and whatever else he has in his life because he is a trainer who does not accept any of that whatsoever," added Schaefer, after Hatton said he is not open to an eight-week training away from home. Hatton said he is not welcome to the idea of being away from Manchester City for eight weeks reiterating that he wants to train at home adding that he would miss his fiancé, his son and his favorite football team. Schaefer said Mayweather Sr. is the type of trainer that will make sure Hatton will be in the best shape when he climbs the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Hatton, also known as The Hitman, has the tendency to gain weight between fights after regular night outs drinking beer with his friends at neighborhood pubs. Scahefer said if Hatton wins over Pacquiao, Mayweather Sr. would prove that De La Hoya made the wrong choice of not hiring him as a trainer for the fight. Schaefer added Mayweather Sr. wants to show that he can train a fighter to beat Pacquiao. “One thing Mayweather Sr. have is an incredible will to win." Pacquiao, meanwhile, is set to leave for London Thursday to join Hatton for their promotional tour in Manchester. Both fighters will begin the promo tour with a fan rally in the Great Hall at the Trafford Centre. The promo tour will have a press only event in London on Monday then will have stops in the US cities of New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco. - GMANews.TV
