Suspect in Ateneo road accident may spend weekend in jail

MANILA, Philippines – The suspect in the death of the 10-year-old Ateneo grade school pupil may have to spend the weekend in police custody as the Quezon City regional trial court may come out with its release order on Monday yet, police said Friday. Senior Inspector Erlito Renegin, chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Traffic Sector 3, said Ma. Theresa Torres had already posted bail and is only awaiting the court’s release order for her temporary liberty. "Nagbayad na ng piyansa kagabi, mga 10 p.m…Nasa korte na yung kaso. Baka sa Lunes na ibigay yung release order [The suspect already posted bail 10 p.m. on Thursday. The release order may be handed to us on Monday]," Renegin told GMANews.TV. Renegin said that magistrates at the Quezon City RTC are presently in a convention and may attend to the issuance of the release order on Monday next week. Torres, who is facing reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries charges, was the driver of the van that hit and ran over Ateneo fourth grade student Julian Carlo Miguel “Amiel" Alcantara last Tuesday at the Ateneo De Manila University campus in Quezon City. Alcantara was rushed to the New Era Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His nanny, Tomasa “Tata" Suarez, sustained leg injuries. Amiel’s father, Jose Fernando “Pepe" Alcantara, subsequently filed on Wednesday a formal complaint of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries against Torres. Torres remains detained under the custody of the Quezon City Police District’s Traffic Enforcement Unit pending the release order. Traffic Sector 3’s latest progress report said the Quezon City’s Office of the City Prosecutor imposed the P42,000 bail bond – P30,000 for the homicide aspect of the case and P12,000 for the physical injuries aspect of the case – “for Torres’ temporary liberty." GMANews.TV tried to talk to Torres but Renegin refused to have her interviewed. "Malungkot na maulungkot siya. Magulo isip niya. Ayaw niyang makipag-usap sa kahit kanino. Pero kanina bumisita dito yung iba niyang kamag-anak [She seems really downcast and not in her right frame of mind. She does not want to talk to anybody. But awhile ago, her relatives visited her]," Renegin said. Torres, however, extended her apologies to the Alcantara family. "I apologize to them for the difficulties, sorrow, and trouble plaguing their lives brought by the tragic accident and I pray to God that they overcome that suffering. I and my family are also suffering from this experience. God knows no one among us wants this thing to happen in our lives," Torres said in a statement shown in GMA News' Kara David’s report over QTV’s Balitanghali. - GMANews.TV
