MANILA, Philippines - About 1,500 members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) geared up early Saturday for the first installment of their monthly “fun run."
Present during the event were PNP chief Director General Jesus Versoza and AFP chief of staff Gen. Alexander Yano, who both ran in the three-kilometer category for those aged 49 and up.
Those younger ran under the five-kilometer and seven-kilometer categories or participated in the cross-country cycling category.
Q’s Balitanghali reported on Saturday that officials of the AFP plan to conduct the event during the last Saturday of every month to emphasize the need to take care of one’s health.
“Ang physical fitness naman has always been part of the profession namin. So whether there is a requirement or not, talagang ginagawa namin yan lalo na ngayon na yung physical fitness eh talagang nirerevive natin as as requirement ng mga promotion at designation ng ating mga key officers," Yano told GMA reporter Trisha Zafra.
[Physical fitness has always been part of our profession. So whether there is a requirement or not, we still do it. But we are also trying to revive physical fitness as a requirement for the promotion and designation of key officers]
Moreover, Versoza said that this is a good time when everyone under the AFP could bond with one another.
“Isang way ito na nagkakasama-sama kami at nagkakaroon ng fellowship after. We are now developing the habit na habang tumatakbo, nagkukuwentuhan. All throughout the three-kilometer run, nagkukuwentuhan kami ni Yano," he said.
[This is one way when we can all be together and have fellowships after. We are now developing the habit of talking with each other while running. All throughout the three-kilometer run, I was talking with Yano]
