MANILA, Philippines – The Quezon Red Oilers exacted revenge on the MP Warriors GenSan team of boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, 82-71, to capture the Taguig City Leg of the 2009 Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II at the C. P. Tinga Memorial Hall Saturday evening.
Mark Magsumbol converted eight free throws in the fourth period that held off the rally attempts of Pacquaio’s Warriors and sealed the win. The Warriors also compounded their woes by going without a field goal in the last 4:50. Ramsey Williams put a cap on the Quezon victory with a triple for an 82-69 cushion entering the final minute.
The day earlier, the Warriors whacked the Red Oilers in double overtime, 103-90 as the Warriors looked to win their first ever leg crown.
Williams topped the Red Oilers with 15 points and six assists followed by Magsumbol with 14. Jethrone Recustodio paced the Warriors with 17 markers while Medalla chipped in 11.
Over at the Pototan Astrodome in Pototan, Iloilo, the Trace-Laguna Stallions survived a nail biter over the host Iloilo Mang Inasals, 65-63, to cart away the Iloilo Leg. The Stallions joined the idle undefeated Misamis Oriental Meteors as the only teams with two leg titles in the current conference.
Former UE standout guard Robert Labagala was named as the Taguig City leg’s Most Valuable Player after leading the Oilers all week long while Jerwin Gaco was adjudged the Iloilo Leg’s MVP. -GMANews.TV
