Insulto sa Pinoy nurses
Good day! I am Rommel, a Filipino nurse here in New Zealand. I am writing with regards to the article that I have read in the New Zealand Herald. I was really hurt when society director David Wills said that, " It is easier to get a fresh nursing graduate from Kenya than from the Philippines." Along with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, they are now doubting the quality of Philippines nursing graduates. Because the number of nursing students in the Philippines boomed from 30,000 in 2004 to 450,000 in 2008. I believe that Filipino nurses are the best in the world. That is why I am hurting on what Mr. Wills had said. I have been working here for more than four years now. Comparing the knowledge and skills of nurses from Philippines and from New Zealand, we are far more ahead of them. Just recently, the HR department of Middlemore Hospital went to the Philippines and recruited Filipino nurses. The hospital shouldered their airfare, bridging course expenses, and accommodation while training. Why? Because they prefer to spend on Filipino nurses than in any other nationalities. Because they know that Filipino nurses are highly skilled and knowledgeable. New Zealand is an english-speaking country, but their nurses cannot even spell medical terminologies. They cannot even spell lay words that they use in their everyday life. Horrible isn't it. But they can still afford to raise their standards for qualifications for the overseas nurses to register as a nurse in New Zealand. Before, their IELTS (International English Languate Test System) requirement is average of 6.5 regardless of the scores of each bands (Reading, Speaking, Writing, Listening). Now they have raised it to at least 7 on each band. Quite high that even New Zealanders will have difficulty to pass. And they know it. Please check on the article at www.nzherald.co.nz and on the search bar, enter Filipino nurses. all the articles that was written by Lincoln Tan are there. Including Filipino nurses working as Health Care Assistants because they cannot reach the required score of 7 on each band of the IELTS exam. That actually includes my wife. I hope you could investigate on this. Ambassador Bienvenido Tejano actually think that this could escalate into a political issue between New Zealand and Philippines. Thank you for reading my email.
