UST Tigers grab UAAP general championship for 36th time
MANILA, Philippines - Pouncing on its solid showing in many fronts, University of Santo Tomas bagged the general championship of the 71st University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season for its 36th overall crown. The overall champions for the 11th straight now, the Tigers finished with a winning aggregate of 333 points built on nine titles. They won menâs fencing, womenâs football, menâs swimming, menâs table tennis, menâs and womenâs taekwondo, womenâs tennis, menâs volleyball and menâs beach volleyball. UST also posted eight second-place finishes (menâs badminton, menâs chess, womenâs judo, softball, womenâs table tennis, menâs tennis, menâs and womenâs track and field) and grabbed eight third-place trophies (womenâs badminton, womenâs basketball, womenâs chess, womenâs fencing, menâs judo, womenâs swimming, womenâs volleyball and womenâs beach volleyball) to cement its position as the leagueâs top school. The UAAP awards 15 points to a champion team in an event, 12 points for second and 10 points for third. The fourth placer is given eight points, the fifth placer is awarded six points, the sixth placer is given four points, the seventh placer is awarded two points and the eighth placer is given one point. La Salle checked in at a distant second place with 241 after taking home three titles in womenâs chess, menâs tennis and womenâs volleyball. The Green Archers took runner up honors in womenâs badminton, menâs basketball, womenâs football, menâs judo, menâs swimming and womenâs tennis; and third place in menâs badminton, menâs football, womenâs judo and menâs volleyball. University of the Philippines, the host school for this season, finished in third place with 235 even as the Fighting Maroons captured one title all season in menâs football. The Fighting Maroons also had second-place finishes in baseball, womenâs basketball, womenâs fencing, womenâs swimming and menâs volleyball, and finished third in menâs fencing, menâs swimming, menâs and womenâs table tennis, womenâs taekwondo and menâs tennis. Far Eastern University collected seven titles but settled for fourth place with 233 after winning womenâs badminton, womenâs basketball, menâs chess, womenâs table tennis, menâs and womenâs track and field and womenâs beach volleyball crowns. Ateneo finished fifth with 199 after winning the menâs basketball, menâs judo and womenâs swimming crowns. University of the East placed sixth with 170 as the Red Warriors took the menâs badminton and womenâs fencing titles. Adamson finished seventh with 99 on the strength of crowns from baseball and softball. National University took the eighth spot with 35 points. âGMANews.TV
