Laid off Pinoy cook arrested for Dubai theft

MANILA, Philippines - A Filipino cook was arrested in the United Arab Emirates for pocketing more than 22,000 dirhams (Dh) or roughly 286,000 pesos from his former employer using duplicate keys. An online report from Gulf News said the Filipino was arrested by Dubai's Criminal Investigation Department in the Port Saeed area but retrieved from him only a total of Dh 21,100 (roughly P279,000). Investigators said the management of an undisclosed restaurant in Deira City Centre, a large shopping mall in Dubai, had earlier fired the Filipinos for an alleged misbehavior. The restaurant’s manager complained that a day’s collection of around Dh20,600 as well as the Dh2,000 cash advance by the management, was stolen from the office safe. The manager said that he locked the safe but could not open it the next day as it was covered with some sort of glue. A locksmith forced open the safe but the manager only recovered Dh1,500. Suspecting that the theft was an inside job, authorities traced the crime to the laid off Filipino. The report said the Filipino confessed to the crime upon the arrest. No formal suit was reportedly filed. - Mark Joseph Ubalde, GMANews.TV
