'Boom Boom' out of action for six months after wrist operation
MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxing prospect Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista will be out of action for the next six months. The 22-year-old fighter of the famed ALA boxing gym in Cebu recently underwent operation on his left wrist that is expected to sideline him for the next two quarters of the year. ALA boxing stable president Michael Aldeguer said the operation had to be done now before the injury gets serious. “His hurting left wrist has been the reason why Boom Boom had not been fighting the way he used to in the past," said the son of boxing patron Tony Aldeguer. “Now that the operation is over, hintayin na lang mag-heal yan and then konting pahinga before he climbs the ring again," the young Aldeguer added. The native of Tagbilaran, Bohol last fought in November when he scored a unanimous eight-round decision win over Heriberto Ruiz in the undercard of the Ricky Hatton-Paul Malignaggi 12-round fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bautista has been on a comeback trail following the disappointing first round knockout he suffered at the hands of Daniel Ponce De Leon in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title fight in 2007 in Sacramento, California. The loss was the first professional setback for the Filipino. But since that humiliating experience, Boom Boom had bounced back and won his last four fights. -GMANews.TV
