Meralco expresses support for Earth Hour

MANILA, Philippines - Manila Electric Co., the Philippines’ largest power distributor, expressed full support for Earth Hour 2009, an international campaign calling for serious and sustained action on global warming. As an expression of support for the cause, the campaign urges people from all walks of life to turn off essential lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 28, 2009, Saturday. Other organizations representing civil society, the business community, the religious sector, the youth, national agencies and local governments have likewise extended their support for this event. “Along with other corporate sectors, Meralco will participate in this momentous hour by switching off all the lights in the company’s head office, business centers, extension offices and sectors within the franchise area," Meralco Vice President and Corporate Marketing Head Miguel Lopez said. Earth Hour Philippines 2009 hopes to involve 10 million Filipinos and 500 businesses in key cities across the country. Globally, it aims to reach one billion people in 1,000 cities all over the world. Meralco is known for practices and programs that promote the care of the environment. These include the collection of used batteries, tree planting projects, and the intensive promotion of energy efficiency. “We hope that in our own little way, we will be able to help create awareness on the need to protect the environment and to encourage other people to do their part to support the cause," Lopez said. - GMANews.TV
