Early debates among 2010 presidentiables sought

MANILA, Philippines - A lawmaker on Tuesday called for early debates among presidential aspirants in next year’s elections to allow the public to gauge their abilities even before the start of the campaign season. In a statement, Akbayan party-list Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel said it is important to see who among the presidential aspirants can offer a new brand of politics. "Clearly, with the way the presidential race is shaping up, the people are already looking forward to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's exit in 2010. What they are apprehensive about is whether there is an alternative among the emerging contenders," she said. Hontiveros made the statement following Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio's statement that he is considering running for president in 2010, with Isabela Governor Grace Padaca as his possible running-mate. Various non-government organizations have tagged the tandem – known for their anti-corruption stance – as an alternative to traditional politics. Earlier, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said Malacañang may look into the possibility of adopting Panlilio as its standard bearer for 2010. But Hontiveros, who has earlier announced her in intention to run for senator under the opposition slate, urged Panlilio to "go opposition." She said the priest-turned-governor should distance himself from the Arroyo administration if he is sincere in his campaign for reforms. "He should go opposition. Pushing for reforms while getting the support of the administration at the same time is both an act of political suicide and of self-contradiction," she said in a text message. - Johanna Camille Sisante, GMANews.TV
