Lewis sparks Rain or Shine comeback against Burger King

MANILA, Philippines – Import Jae Lewis played big with his burly body helping spark a Rain or Shine’s late scoring run in a 118-112 beating of Burger King Wednesday night in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup at the Araneta Coliseum. The former George Mason University mainstay scored seven of his game-high 40 points in the Elasto Painters’ 14-4 wind up which he himself sparked by making five consecutive baskets before capping it with two free throws that sealed the win for his team. Adding 23 rebounds and four block shots, Lewis easily won his match up against Shawn Daniels, Burger King’s equally heavily-built import, and remained unbeaten in his four outings with the Elasto Painters. Overall, Rain or Shine upped its mark to 5-1. “I’m just having fun out there," said Lewis of his monster performance. “It’s simple. Jai (Lewis) was in control of the game," said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia. “He’s a very valuable import here." The Whoppers, who led 108-104, with 1:49 left to play, suffered their third defeat in seven games and finished the match without coach Yeng Guiao, who was ejected with 28 seconds to go after being whistled for two straight technical fouls. Lewis knocked down his fourth triple with 1:17 left to go as Rain or Shine seized the upperhand at 109-108. After Gary David bungled a three-point try, the Elasto Painters ran the open court, with Sol Mercado finding a streaking JR Reyes for an easy two. Guiao mapped out a strategy during a timeout after that, but the play got botched when Arwind Santos lost the leather. In Rain or Shine’s return play, Marvin Cruz fouled Dulay, which drew the ire of Guiao. But the Whoppers won’t go down without fighting. David converted two free throws, Gabe Norwood missed two charities, and David drove strong to the hoop to make it 114-112 with 10.9 seconds remaining. Lewis, however, showcased his smooth and calm touch at the free throw line and sank both charities, capping a splendid performance for an import who’s only seeing action for only the fourth time in the league. David led the Whoppers with 27 points and Santos added 22, while Cyrus Baguio, Celino Cruz and Wynne Arboleda combined for 31 points. – GMANews.TV
