Earth Hour: Manila prelate laments wastage of resources

MANILA, Philippines - On the eve of Earth Hour, Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales lamented humanity's irresponsible use of God-given natural resources. Rosales, in a statement for the event, reminded the faithful that the earth is the only "temporary" home they have, and that they are merely "guests" on this planet. "Alarming signs are seen today in the balding forests, eroded mountains, plastic waste-clogged polluted rivers and bodies of water, dying sea mammals and the general warming of the planet — all these tell us that the earth and its resources have not been used responsibly," he said in his statement, which was posted on the Manila Archdiocese website. "The earth is not something we humans use, and many times abuse, to get the most from it for either pleasure or gain. The earth 'is a gift offered by the Creator to the human community, entrusted to the intelligence and moral responsibility of men and women,'" he added. Rosales fully backed the Earth Hour initiative that started in 2007, noting it started as an idea with the dramatic shutting off of light for an hour. Now, he said it is becoming a world practice to build up awareness for the importance of care for the fragile earth we live in. "The Church reminds us that the world is not ours to own. We are all God’s guests on His planet Earth. In this way, we respectfully behave and responsibly use the resources we find here for ourselves, and leaving the rest of the resources for the future generations. Sixty minutes of thought and continuous care for this fragile gift called, Ang Daigdig at ang Yaman Nito, is worth more than the energy saved," he said. - GMANews.TV
