Cebu conquers Visayas leg of ABAP slugfest

MANILA, Philippines – Cebu conquered the inaugural staging of the Smart-Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) Visayas Area Amateur Boxing Championship winning nine of the 17 finals they played in Ormoc City.
Cebu sent 17 fighters to the finals facing Bago City in six of the championship fights. Cebu won four of those six showdowns.
Margarito Moya opened up Cebu’s rampage when he scored a come-from-behind 9-8 win over Bago’s Charlie Panes in the Kids 31kg class.
Cebu’s 13-year old boxing phenom Jack Tepora could get a possible slot in the National team after winning the gold in the 38.5-40kg class after a 22-7 decision against Alvin Sibuga of Bacolod City.
That win earned Tepora the Best Boxer title in the school boys’ division.
Other winners from Cebu are Jimmy Barazon, Danlou Codilla, Jahlee Payao, Adrino Pescante, Anthony Sabalde, Marjohn Baliguat, and Julito Tuastumban and Edu Serrano against Allan Refuela and Timoteo Altubar in an all-Cebu final.
Bago won the first three championship bouts of the day with Ian Lescano dominating Cebu’s Melmark Dignos, 11-6, while Ryan James Flores scored a close 9-7 win over Ronald Ellenas.
Bago’s Niel Tambanillo tallied the first referee stoppage contest when he beat Bernard Arandilla of Negros Occidental in the 1:29 mark of the first round. Rogen Ladon of Bago City earned the junior boys’ best boxer title after an 11-1 win over Iloilo’s Espiridon Pubadura.
Bacolod finished third overall highlighted by Juren Labordo’s impressive 16-2 win over Cebu’s Velmark Dignos. Labordo’s teammate and youth girls’ campaigner Christy Jan Rivas also won by RSC against compatriot Stefanie Melliguen.
The Cebuanos are coached by former professional fighter Rey Orais and ex-amateur standout Efren Tabanas in the tournament, which had Kananga town hosting the first two days. – GMANews.TV
