MANILA, Philippines - Three employees of Samuya Food Manufacturing Inc. were tested positive for salmonella bacteria, the Department of Health (DOH) said Tuesday.
DOH-National Epidemiology Center chief Dr. Eric Tayag said they are still determining if the employees were the source of the salmonella that were found in two of Samuya's peanut butter products or they were the ones who got the bacteria from the products.
He also said the type of salmonella found on the employees still needs to undergo zero-typing to determine if these were the same type found on the peanut butter products.
“Tatakbo pa nang pitong araw ‘yung examination. Yan ang tantiya ng Research Institute for Tropical Medicine sa pagdi-DNA-matching ng salmonella strain sa nakita nila sa peanut butter at doon sa nakita nila sa rectal swab ng empleyado ng Samuya," Tayag said.
[The DNA-matching for the salmonella type found on the employees and on the peanut butters would run for about seven days according to the RITM.]
Last week, two peanut butter products manufactured by Samuya tested positive for two types of salmonella. DOH said Ludy’s Sweet and Creamy Peanut Butter and Yummy Sweet and Creamy Peanut Butter were found positive of salmonella hvittinfoss and senftenberg, respectively.
Tayag said that one type of salmonella strain found on the peanut butters were heat resistant.
The three infected employees already took antibiotics, he added. - Aie Balagtas See, GMANews.TV
