IOC decision on women’s boxing for 2012 Games out in August

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Women boxers should find out in August if they will be allowed to compete at the 2012 London Games. The International Olympic Committee says it's looking at a proposal from the International Amateur Boxing Association, or AIBA, to include women's boxing. Of the 26 Summer Olympic sports federations who are organizing competitions in London, boxing is the only one without female participants. The IOC said in a statement Wednesday that its program commission will "make a recommendation to the executive board," which is set to make a decision at its meeting Aug. 13 in Berlin. AIBA spokesman Richard Baker says the proposal "appeals to a key part of the Olympic charter which calls for gender equality." – AP
