Bishop leads kite-flying protest vs nuke plant
MANILA, Philippines - A senior Manila bishop led civil and Church-based groups in flying kites to oppose the opening of the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines said Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo led the kite-flying at the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan City Monday. “Choose life over debt!" read the slogans on the kites, according to an article posted Tuesday on the CBCP Web site. Joining Pabillo at the “Collective Ascension of Kites" were Bishop Efraim Tendero, national director of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC); Fr. Fernando Loreto, parish priest of Morong, Bataan; and Fr. Ben Moraleda from the Faith-based Congress against Immoral Debts (FCAID). Moraleda said faith-based groups have the moral responsibility to contest any attempts to reactivate BNPP considering that the massive debts acquired for its construction are “immoral." The participants also pointed out that their kite-flying protest was meant to drive home the point to legislators through the event. “We hope that through this activity, a strong message will be sent to the legislators that the people are closely watching them, and that the faith-based sector is making its intervention concerning the BNPP’s operation," said Moraleda. Tess Caseñas of the Women and Gender Commission of the Association of the Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (WGC-AMRSP) said they aim to have lawmakers withdraw their support for House Bill 4631, which seeks to recommission BNPP. The slogan written on the kites was “CHOOSE LIFE OVER DEBT!" Participants from the faith-based sectors included the Diocese of Novaliches, Benedictine Sisters of the Eucharistic King (OSB), Diliman Campus Bible Church (DCBC), St. John the Baptist Parish in San Juan, National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Baclaran, Fr. John Leydon of the Missionary Society of St. Columban, Sr. Edeva Jover of Siena College, Sr. Arnold Maria Noel of the Mission Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS), Order of Fiars Minor (OFM) – Frisco Community and St. Anthony Shrine represented by Fr. Rolly Abas and Bro. Ver Mendoza. Freedom from Debt Coalition vice president Loretta Ann Rosales and lawyer Corazon Fabros from the No to BNPP!, Nuclear Free Bataan Movement (NFBM), and Ana Maria Nemenzo of FDC joined the activity. Photo exhibits, group discussions, and film showing were also among the activities of the event. - GMANews.TV
