Cops accused of using ‘excessive force’ out of Failon case

MANILA, Philippines – Amid accusations of excessive use of force, Quezon City policemen who took part Thursday in the arrest of some members of broadcaster Ted Failon (Mario Teodoro Eton)’s family and household were sacked Friday from the team investigating the case. Metro Manila police director Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales said the cops were “isolated" from the team as they have “no place" in the ongoing investigation. “Out of the team ang taong involved sa investigation at legwork na gagawin [Those involved in the investigation and legwork are out of the team]," he said in an interview on dzXL radio. But he clarified this covers only those who took part in Thursday’s incident at the New Era General Hospital. Moreover, Rosales said the move to relieve the cops from the team was meant to protect them from accusations they were acting out of “vengeance." He noted the QCPD had been the subject of criticisms by Failon in his radio program. Rosales also welcomed the prospect of an investigation by the Commission on Human Rights on the supposed excessive use of force. “We welcome the investigation that will be independently conducted by CHR. On our end we will also be investigating," he said. - GMANews.TV
