Bishops to Erap: Think twice on plan to run for 2010

MANILA, Philippines - If he really wants to unite the Filipino nation, former President Joseph Estrada should set aside his personal ambition to run for President in 2010. Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad is not in favor of Estrada’s candidacy because the former chief executive's time has already passed. “If he wants to unite the Filipino nation I think he should serve as unifying force for the opposition and let them come up with one presidential contender," he said on Church-run Radyo Veritas. Excerpts of the interview were posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Web site (www.cbcpnews.com). Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez Jr. added Estrada should carefully “reflect, think and consider" all other options before deciding to run for the presidency next year. The former President, who was ousted in 2001, had hinted that he would run for the presidency in 2010 if other opposition bets fail to unite behind a single ticket. Iñiguez also advised Estrada to look at his track record and see if he is fit to lead. - GMANews.TV
