Blast rocks S. Kudarat town

COTABATO CITY, Philippines – A powerful improvised explosive device exploded at a public market in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat, Tuesday night, the military here said.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Ponce, 6th Army division spokesperson, said the blast occurred around 9 p.m. but no casualty was reported so far.

Ponce said initial investigation showed that a man left a back pack containing the explosive device between the public market and a transport terminal.

He said probers are looking into the possibility that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front was behind the attack.

The blast in Lebak, a farming town in the coastal area of Sultan Kudarat province, was the third attack in two days in Central Mindanao region.

On Monday, four persons were hurt in a blast that ripped through a Rural Transit bus in Kabacan, North Cotabato. Police blamed the blast on an extortion group called al-Khobar extortion gang.

Hours earlier, suspected MILF rebels blasted the Maria Cristina bridge in Iligan City, making the structure impassable to motor vehicles. - E. Fernandez, GMANews.TV
