Palace asks traders not to overprice school supplies

MANILA, Philippines – President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Thursday asked businessmen not to overprice school materials when classes open in June, a radio report said. Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita was quoted by radio dzBB as saying President Arroyo expressed concern that unscrupulous entrepreneurs would take advantage of the usual rush to buy school supplies. Ermita said the President also ordered concerned government agencies to step up their monitoring activities to ensure that prices remain stable. Since the financial crisis swept the world during the last quarter of 2008, President Arroyo had pushed for various means to cushion the Philippines from the effects of the financial crunch. Among others, she had met with various state leaders in a bid to increase employment opportunities for Filipinos working abroad. The President had also repeatedly asked government offices to tighten their belts as a way of coping with the economic crisis. - Katrina Francisco, GMANews.TV
