Undermanned Adamson beats Saint Benilde in V-League

MANILA, Philippines – Adamson, playing minus its two stars, defeated College of Saint Benilde, 25-20, 18-25, 24-26, 26-24, 15-10 in Thursday’s Shakey’s V-League action at The Arena in San Juan City. Paulina Soriano filled in the void left by Nerissa Bautista and Lilet Mabbayad’s absence posting a career-high 21 points to pull off the win for the Lady Falcons. Rissa Jane Laguilles contributed 18 points for Adamson, which posted their third win in four games. Bautista and Mabbayad are still out of the country playing in a beach volleyball tournament in Vietnam. Both players will be back for the Lady Falcons when Adamson meets Far Eastern University on May 10. Adamson is hoping that with Bautista back, they will not again be dragged in a nerve-wrecking five-set match, just like the last time when they met Lyceum last Sunday. Leading the Lady Blazers was guest player Maureen Penetrante who had 24 hits but was not enough for Saint Benilde to avoid suffering their second straight defeat after downing University of the Philippines in their opening match. Katty Kwan gave Penetrante scoring support when she added 21 points while Cindy Velasquez and Giza Yumang finished with 12 points each. The Lady Blzers’ losing effort was not at all futile after posting a record of sorts with a season-high 23 blocks. Yumang had seven blocks while Penetrante had six. What made things difficult for the Lady Blazers inside the court was their 30 errors in the almost two-hour match. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV Games on Sunday 4:00 p.m. – FEU vs St. Benilde 6:00 p.m. – Ateneo vs UST
