US-based IM Sevillano is Westwood chess open champ

MANILA, Philippines – United States-based Filipino International Master Enrico “Ikong" Sevillano emerged as the Open section champion of the Westwood Spring International Open chess championships held recently in Los Angeles, California. The Cebuano native defeated FIDE Master Manukyan Garush in the last round to end up with four points based on his four wins and a defeat in the five-round tournament. Overall, Sevillano finished tied with Garush and John Daniel Bryant but earned the crown based on a better tie break. Sevillano, a 1986 Asian junior champion, is currently living in Tehachapi, California. He was also part of the Philippine chess team in the 1992 and 1994 Chess Olympiads. Another Filipino bet, Remigio Pampliega, finished tied for fourth to eight places with 3.0 points. – GMANews.TV
