Kris Aquino upbeat over mother's operation

MANILA, Philippines – Actress Kristina Bernadette "Kris" Aquino-Yap is upbeat about the condition of her mother, former President Corazon Aquino, who underwent an hour-and-a-half-long colon operation at the Makati Medical Center Monday afternoon. In an interview aired over her television show, Kris excitedly narrated the hours after the operation, which she said went smoothly. "In the 14 months that my mom fought cancer, it was the first time that I saw that kind of relief and gratitude in her face," she said. Kris, the youngest child of the former President and slain ex-senator Benigno Aquino Jr., said the operation itself was already good news. "Hindi naman papayagan ng mga doktor kung malubha siya [The doctors won't allow the operation is her condition is not grave]," she said. Kris was not present in her television show as she was keeping watch over Mrs. Aquino at the surgical intensive care unit (ICU), where the former President was brought past 2 p.m. after the operation. The Aquino family on March 24, 2008 announced that Mrs. Aquino had been diagnosed with colon cancer. Kris said the first word her mom uttered after waking up at about 5 p.m. was, "Kamusta [How was it]?" She said she told her that the operation went "so good" and informed her that the cancerous portion of the colon had been taken out. She said her mother then asked her to pray using the rosary given to the former president by Sister Lucia, a Fatima visionary. Kris said she fought back tears as she prayed the rosary. “I was fighting back tears. My Mom was okay when she woke up. I saw in her face how strong her faith was that she will recover," she said. - GMANews.TV
