Sorsogon City in state of calamity due to ‘Dante’


MANILA, Philippines - Sorsogon City in the Bicol region has been placed under state of calamity following the devastation brought by typhoon “Dante." A GMA Flash Report quoted Mayor Leovic Dioneda as saying that about P200 million worth of infrastructures and agricultural lands in two villages have been damaged by the typhoon. Latest government figures said 26 people – 20 of them from Sorsogon City – were killed in the typhoon. “Dante" had also displaced 43,215 families or 236,887 people in 220 villages in the Bicol region, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC). The government has already set up 174 evacuation centers that are now accommodating 9,480 families or 54,308 people. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said "Dante" has been moving away for the Philippine territory. As of 2 p.m., "Dante" was estimated 1,150 kilometers east of Tuguegarao, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph.
