Martin Nievera thumbs down apology

MANILA, Philippines - Singer Martin Nievera said he would not apologize for doing his best. This was his response to the call of the National Historical Institute for him to apologize over his allegedly unconventional rendition of the Philippine national anthem during the Pacquiao-Hatton fight. “I did that to the best of my ability and I will not apologize for doing my best," Nievera said in a phone-patch interview aired over GMA News’ “Saksi." The NHI on Monday accused Nievera of violating the law on how to properly sing “Lupang Hinirang." Section 37, Chapter 2 of Republic Act 8491, or the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, says the national anthem should be played or sung in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of its composer, Julian Felipe. It also says that violators, upon conviction, will be fined P5,000 to P20,000 and may be imprisoned for no more than a year. - Aie Balagtas See, GMANews.TV
