Another US marine accused of raping Pinay in Makati – report

MANILA, Philippines - Another American marine participating in the RP-US Baliktan exercises has been accused of raping a Filipina. In an article posted on pinoyweekly.org, women’s group Gabriela was quoted as saying that the victim, only identified as “Vanessa," was raped by a US marine last April 18 inside the latter’s hotel room in Makati City. In a phone interview with GMANews.TV Wednesday night, Gabriela spokesperson Jom Salvador confirmed the story. She, however, refused to divulge additional details about the incident until a press conference on May 14. Nonetheless, Salvador said Vanessa’s case “clearly rebuffed" claims by the government that the case of Suzette “Nicole" Nicolas was an isolated one. Nicolas accused US Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith of raping her in 2005. The Court of Appeals absolved Smith of the crime last April following Nicolas’ affidavit doubting that she was raped by the marine. The US embassy in Manila was unavailable for comment on the latest reported rape of a Filipina as of posting time. GMANews.TV also tried but failed to get the side of the Foreign Affairs department through its spokesman Bayani Mangibin. Vanessa and the American reportedly began seeing each other at a club in Taguig City’s The Fort last April 10. The man introduced himself as a member of the US marines, befriended the victim, and later asked for Vanessa’s cellular phone number, according to the report. - GMANews.TV
