MANILA, Philippines - Two members of an elite police strike force died while six others were injured when they were struck by lightning in the mountainous area of Abra in northern Philippines, a police official said Friday.
Police identified the two fatalities as Police Officers 1 Bryan Ayan and Edison Coyogan, both members of the elite Special Action Force.
Police Inspector Palmera Domingo, spokesman of the Abra Provincial Police, said the six other injured policemen include the group’s team leader identified as only Inspector Marvin Oloan.
Domingo said the cops were resting at Sitio Aguibo, Barangay Poblacion in Malibcong town at around 2 p.m. on Thursday when they were hit by lightning.
"They were in the area to conduct reconnaissance operations because there is a plan to put up a police station there. They were already resting when the incident occurred," Domingo said in a phone interview.
Domingo added that the lightning struck the tree where the cops tied their hammocks.
The official said Oloan was initially declared in critical condition at the Abra Provincial Hospital but was already declared safe by the doctors yesterday.
