NBI subpoenas Hayden Kho, Vicki Belo over sex video mess

(Updated 7:12 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines - Government agents on Thursday subpoenaed three people - including controversial doctor Hayden Kho and his erstwhile girlfriend, celebrity cosmetic surgeon Dr. Vicki Belo - in connection with the sex video involving actress Katrina Halili. National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) assistant regional director Vicente de Guzman III said Belo, Kho and a certain Eric Johnston Chua were subpoenaed to appear at the NBI headquarters in Manila on Friday. De Guzman said they are looking into the information that Chua was the one who uploaded the controversial footage in the popular video-sharing Internet site YouTube. “We already sent the subpoenas to them," De Guzman said, adding that Kho is expected to appear at 10:30 a.m. and Belo at 1:30 a.m. The subpoenas were sent a day after Halili [Maria Katrina Irene P. Halili in real life] went to the NBI office to file a complaint against Kho, her former lover. She returned to the NBI office Thursday to undergo psychological evaluation and finish her statement on the controversy. De Guzman said their investigation aims to unmask the person who uploaded the video on the Internet. Halili said the video was taken without her consent. The NBI official said Belo, proprietor of the Belo Medical Group, was also invited after the bureau learned that she also has copies of the sex video. “Tatanungin namin kung bakit meron siyang kopya at kung saan niya ito nakuha [We will ask her how come she has a copy of the video and where did she get it]," De Guzman said. Belo and Kho were recently seen flying to Japan, but NBI director Nestor Mantaring said they have already verified that the two have already returned to the country. “We monitored that they arrived in the country from Japan last May 16," Mantaring said in a press conference also on Thursday. Kho has been placed under the Bureau of Immigration’s watch-list because of the controversy. Adel Tamano, lawyer of Belo, said they would respect the legal procedures even as he stressed that his client is innocent of the accusations against her. Earlier in the day, the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) said it has formed a committee to look into the claims against Kho for conduct unbecoming of a doctor. PMA spokesperson Bu Castro said the inquiry would focus on whether Halili was a patient of Kho, whether their relationship was private, and if Kho was indeed the one who distributed the video. He admitted the PMA was "forced" to come up with its own investigation after noticing the furor caused by the sex video scandal. PMA president Rey Melchor Santos said the medical community is condemning Kho’s clandestine manner of taking footages of his sexual acts. "No one among my colleagues is happy over what happened. The scandal could damage the reputation of our profession]," he said. Halili, for her part, filed before the Philippine Regulation Commission (PRC) early Thursday her complaint seeking to revoke Kho’s license. Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said Kho could also face charges for violating the Anti-Wiretapping Law. - with Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV
