A(H1N1) flu 'very manageable' compared to SARS - Swiss pharmaceutical exec

MANILA, Philippines - Despite the scare surrounding it, a Swiss maker of anti-flu medicine claimed the A(H1N1) is "very manageable," at least when compared to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday this was the gist of the "assurance" from Severin Schwan, CEO of Roche Group, which makes Tamiflu medicines. "Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland met with Dr. Severin Schwan, CEO of Roche Group, the sole manufacturer of Tamiflu. Dr. Schwan said that the latest A(H1N1) flu was a 'very manageable flu strain' compared to SARS," the DFA said in an update on A(H1N1) on its Web site (http://dfa.gov.ph/?p=5186). It did not give further details of the meeting, but added Schwan said Roche is closely coordinating with Geneva’s World Health Organization scientists in doubling its research in preparation for a possible outbreak of stronger new flu strain. The DFA's update came a day after Health Secretary Francisco Duque III confirmed a 10-year-old girl was the first case of A(H1N1) in the Philippines. Meanwhile, the DFA said the Philippine Embassy in London has integrated its information drive on A(H1N1) with its overseas absentee voting (OAV) campaign. "While conducting its consular outreach mission and OAV mobile registration in Liverpool, Philippine consular officials provided the Filcom members with Post’s advisory on A(H1N1) outbreak," the DFA said. - GMANews.TV
