POC defers recognition of PhilCycling’s Hiso group

MANILA, Philippines – Internal squabbles in PhilCycling’s Rolando Hiso camp forced the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to defer handing down their recognition to the group as the legitimate leaders of the said National Sports Association. A former national rider, Hiso won the presidency in the POC ordered PhilCycling election held May 9 at the Amoranto Stadium in Quezon City. The election was supervised by POC representative and soft tennis president Jeff Tamayo where Hiso and 14 other board members would have gotten the automatic recognition from the NOC as rival group led by Tagaytay Mayor Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino failed to show up. But cracks in the Hiso leadership began to show as other board members wanted to oust the newly installed leader in favor of businessman and sportsman Mikee Romero, who was elected chairman in absentia. “We had discussed the matter thoroughly and came up with the best situation not to give our recognition. There were reports that in the May 17 board meeting, Hiso was replaced by Mikee Romero as president and the POC would want to clear the matter first," said POC deputy secretary-general Mark Joseph after Friday's Expanded Board meeting at the NOC office in Ultra, Pasig City. The POC formed a three-man committee made up of chairman Monico Puentevella, first vice president Manny Lopez and special assistant to the POC president Go Teng Kok to look into the matter. In a text message, Romero has said that he is not taking any position in PhilCycling and would want to remain neutral since Bert Lina, who is the chairman emeritus of the Tolentino group, is his business associate. Even the entry of sports patron Manuel V. Pangilinan to the Lina-backed PhilCycling faction made the matter worse since he is also Romero’s business partner. The Execom, however, ruled with finality the election of Amelita "Ming" Ramos as Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) president The said election was also held last May 9 and witnessed by archery president Leonora Brawner and body building secretary-general Corina Mojica. – GMANews.TV
