Army sergeant killed during escape try - NPA

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - Communist rebels on Sunday admitted killing the Army soldier they abducted last Friday in Monkayo town in the southern Philippine province of Compostela Valley. In a statement, Rigoberto Sanchez of the New People’s Army Southern Mindanao Regional Operational Command said Staff Sergeant Rollen Maglangit was killed while trying to escape. “He [Maglangit] was able to run a distance, but was hit by a burst of gunfire from the pursuing NPA troops," Sanchez said. Sanchez said Maglangit tried to escape after they informed him of that he would be subjected to an investigation for possible violations of human rights. He noted that Maglangit’s unit, the 36th Infantry Battalion, has a “notorious record" in the provinces of Agusan del Sur, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley. “After being informed of the investigation he needed to undergo and despite repeated warnings from his captors not to run in the course of their trek, Sergeant Maglangit showed clear signs of resistance and eventually tried to escape," the rebel spokesman said. He said they left behind Maglangit’s corpse on purpose so that residents would easily discover his body “for proper disposition."
