Report: 5 killed in Ilocos Norte road accident

MANILA, Philippines – Five people were confirmed dead in an accident involving a truck and a passenger jeep in Ilocos Norte province Sunday night.

Ilocos Norte police director Chief Superintendent Ramon Gatan said Monday the incident occurred about 6 p.m. Sunday in Pasaleng village in Pagudpud town.

“May nagbanggaan na dalawang sasakyan, isang truck carrying fruits and vegetables from Cagayan ... isang truck at isang passenger jeep [A truck and a jeep collided, the truck was carrying fruits and vegetables from Cagayan]," Gatan said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He said all five fatalities were passengers of the jeep.

An earlier report on Bombo Radyo said six people were killed in the accident.

The truck was loaded with fruits, vegetables and farm products and was heading for Ilocos Sur when the mishap occurred.

Five of the fatalities were initially identified as Redel Taal, BJ Arellano, a certain Ato, a woman identified only as Deline, and Bernardo Molina.

The Bombo Radyo report said at least seven other passengers were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital. The injured included truck driver Michael Olivas, of Lasam town in Cagayan.

Initial investigation showed the truck was traveling at high speed when its brakes failed.

Olivas tried to prevent the truck from falling into a ravine by crashing it into the foot of a mountain. The truck turned turtle and crushed some of the victims, the report said. - GMANews.TV
