Australian national gunned down in Aklan

MANILA, Philippines –A 67-year-old Australian national was gunned down Monday night in Tangalan town in Aklan province, local police said Tuesday. In a report, the Western Visayas Police Regional Office identified the victim as Jim Burney, who was shot dead by a certain Perlito Carlos about 10:20 p.m at a beach resort in Tangalan. Initial investigation showed that Burney was drinking together with one Guia Tagumpay where Carlos’ group was also drinking. "Without any apparent reason, the suspect shot the victim twice in his head, which caused his (Burney’s) instantaneous death," the police report said. Carlos fled the scene on board his motorcycle. He later figured in a road accident and was brought to the Tanguilan police station, where a witness in the shooting incident identified him as the suspect. Police said the motive behind Burney’s killing could be jealousy. – Sophia Dedace and Jodee Agoncillo, GMANews.TV
